OpenFOAM: an HPC perspective. Parallel aspects and enabling on massively parallel architectures

Abstract


A revolution is going on, impacting and transforming how computational mechanics and the associated design and optimization are done: the growing  availability and large scale use of OpenFOAM~\cite{ofwebsite}. OpenFOAM is free and is used by thousands of people worldwide in both academic and industrial settings. This article describes its parallel aspects, the usage and performance on the state of the art HPC (High Performance Computing) clusters and the actual bottlenecks. Suggestions and guidelines are envisaged for an efficient enabling on massively parallel architectures.
